Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time, August 13, 2023

On Saturday, August 26 our Jack’s Yacs young adults will “Light the City”. However, this is not just a young adults event. Everyone is welcome. We will begin with a vigil Mass at 7 PM, followed by some instructions and then we will we hit the streets to evangelize.

The Church will be open all evening. The Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the altar. Musicians will play praise and worship music. The lighting will be subdued.

Volunteers will be on 13th street with votive candles inviting everyone passing by to go into the church and to light a candle and offer a prayer for peace. In past years when we held a Light the City evening, hundreds of people entered the church for a brief or longer time of prayer.

We need people willing to invite those passing by to come into the church. But we also need people to pray in the church. When people enter the church, they need to see some people praying. The presence of people at prayer will encourage the visitors to pray.

It is simple. We need street evangelizers and we need people to be a prayerful presence in the church.

We end at 10:30 PM with benediction and a final prayer. We don’t expect everyone to stay for the entire evening. But perhaps you can give the Lord an hour of prayer. Mark your calendars and plan to spend the evening evangelizing those who pass by Saint John’s on that Saturday evening.
