The Transfiguration of the Lord, August 6, 2023

Saint John Church is a place of prayer and peace in the midst of our busy Center City. During the course of a week, we offer 22 public Masses. Each Mass requires one or more lay volunteers, readers, extraordinary ministers of communion, servers. We also offer 6 hours of confessions each week.

We have a special ministry to the sick because a priest is on call for Thomas Jefferson Hospital 24 hours each day, 365 days per year. We do routine rounds and answer end of life calls. We also visit sick and elderly parishioners in their homes when we know of their need. Please let us know if there are sick and elderly parishioners who are not now being visited.

We have an active young adult ministry with about two organized activities each month. We hope to begin soon a focused ministry for seniors. We had a wonderful fun church picnic a few weeks ago, and this week we will have an after Mass lunch for the Capuchin 150th anniversary party. We are a community that is open to all.

Saint John Church can continue to be a beacon of hope and faith only if many people help. We need our financial supporters to be generous and we need many volunteers. Please do your part to make Saint John’s a vibrant ministry now and for the future.

Historical Preservation Endowment Fund

A few years ago, Saint John the Evangelist Church established this Fund so that there would be money to preserve our beautiful church and ministry for years to come. Each week, we have published the amount given so far. However, this is inaccurate because the money given is invested in the Catholic Foundation of Greater Philadelphia. Due to reversals in the stock market in the past few years, the amount in the Fund is actually a bit less than the total amount given. Donors contributed $559,884 but the Fund total is now $529,803. We have made no withdrawals from the Fund. Since we don’t anticipate any withdrawals in the near future and since the stock market is doing well, we expect the Fund balance to grow. We will no longer publish a weekly tally for this fund. Instead, when the monthly statement arrives, I will put the current total in my column. We continue to welcome donations to this Fund.
