Fifth Sunday of Easter, April 28, 2024

Hanging above my desk in my office is a print of the home of Saint Catherine of Siena. The picture depicts the way the home looks today. A few years ago, I was in Rome for a meeting and I decided to spend two nights in Siena, one full day, because of my special devotion to Saint Catherine. I took a bus from Rome and returned by bus. I was proud that I could figure out and use busses in Italy.

Catherine lived in the 14th century. She was illiterate, but she wrote mystical treatises and many letters with the help of scribes. She was not a nun, but belonged to the Dominican Third Order. She is most known for her letters to Pope Gregory XI in which she coaxed him to leave Avignon, France and return to Rome. She lived in a time when the Church was particularly corrupt and the popes were mixed up in secular politics. It is amazing that the Pope had so much trust in her and that he received correction from her with humility.

My devotion to Saint Catherine is because of her love for the Church. Despite being disappointed again and again by worldly and sinful church officials, priests and bishops, she continued to believe that the Church was the presence of Christ in the world. She teaches us to love the Church and to always work for its reform and holiness. For me, she is a special patron of the Church.

Her feast day is Monday, April 29.

Padre Pio Pilgrimage

On Saturday, May 4, I will lead a pilgrimage to the Padre Pio Center in Barto, PA. I will be the celebrant for the Mass at Barto. There is a sign up sheet in the upper and lower churches for those wishing to attend and who need transportation or who can offer a ride to others.

It looks like most people need a ride and cannot offer a ride to others. I will rent a van and the cost per person will be $20 for the ride.

Here’s the schedule:

  • 8:00 AM Leave Saint John’s
  • 9:30 Arrive at Padre Pio Centre
  • 10:30 Mass
  • 12:00 Lunch (bring your own lunch)
  • 1:30 Depart
  • 3 PM Arrive at Saint John’s

The Deadline for sign up is Sunday, April 28.

Jack’s Yacs Service Project

On Thursday evening, May 2 our young adults will provide a dinner for the residents of Frankford, mostly single mothers with children, at the Padre Pio Prayer Center. We need volunteers. If you are a young adult and would like to help provide this service, please contact Father Tom below.

MANNA food collection

During the month of May, we will have Catholic Charities food bags available in church. You are invited to take a bag home and to fill it with non-perishable foods (canned foods, pasta, sauce, etc) and to bring it to Saint John’s. All food will be donated to the Padre Pio Prayer Center food pantry in Frankford.

We Capuchins have republished the classic prayer book for mothers. We have a few copies available for sale ($30) in our office gift shop.
