Weekly Update December 31, 2023

Jac’s Yacs Epiphany Party

Young adults (people in their 20s and 30s) are invited to pizza, beer (and other beverages) and Catholic trivia after the 6 PM Mass on Sunday January 7.

Christmas Crèche Greccio celebration

Thanks to our Secular Franciscan fraternity and our young adults for a wonderful spiritual meditation on the 800th anniversary of the first Christmas nativity crèche by Saint Francis in 2023. Our event was on Sunday, December 17 and was a prayerful reflection on the beauty of Christmas.

Thanks for supporting Saint John the Evangelist Church in 2023

I have been pastor of Saint John’s since September, 2022. I love Saint John’s Church and I love our mission. We are a prayerful and charitable Catholic presence in the heart of Center City. Center City has changed in recent years. There are fewer downtown workers, more poor and homeless neighbors and concerns about crime and safety. All of us were stunned at the daytime murder and assault at Macy’s, our neighbor, a few weeks ago.

But 13th Street is our home and we witness to God’s love in this neighborhood. Despite challenges, Saint John’s is here and we intend to be here for many years to come. I am grateful for the volunteers who support our beautiful liturgies and who support the work of our parish office. Obviously we can’t stay open without money. Thanks to all of you who donated money during 2023. However, the most important form of support is presence. The presence of each one in church is an encouragement to all. As the world becomes more and more indifferent and at times even hostile to faith, we need one another for inspiration. Your presence in church is not only for yourself. Your presence encourages all of us. Please continue to come for Mass and other church activities. Please continue to support Saint John’s in 2024 with your presence, volunteer hours and donations.
