From The Pastor's Desk

6 December 2020

I have quite a bit of news for you this week which I know will be of interest.

Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta relic. I am happy to inform you that I was able to obtain a first class relic of Saint Mother Teresa from the Mother Teresa Center of the Missionaries Charity in San Diego, CA. I learned that if a pastor requests the relic for veneration of the faithful in his parish, the request may be granted, and so it was with us. I will keep you informed when we will do this, most likely after Masses on a Sunday morning.

Thanks to the generosity of several parishioners we have reached our goal of raising a little over $2,000.00 for the purchase of equipment to allow us to begin live-streaming the 10:30 am Sunday Mass and other liturgical celebrations. We anticipate being able to re-instate live streaming by December 20th if not sooner.

More good news: a substantial donation. Last week a parishioner who wishes to remain anonymous made a donation of $20,000.00 to St. John’s. Let us keep this parishioner in our prayers for their generosity.

As you are aware we are nearing the end of 2020. In your thinking about gifts for family and friends, I ask that you consider making a Year-End financial gift to St. John’s. Here are several suggestions where you might designate your donation:

  • Pastor’s discretion
  • Operating budget
  • Historical Endowment Fund
  • Debt reduction effort

For the third time St. John’s was the victim of vandalism. This third occurrence was on Monday, November 23rd. This is the same individual who has been responsible for the first two breakages to the doors in the lower church. The decision now is either to install security cameras or install aesthetically pleasing iron work over the doors. We are working with the police to arrest this person who has a vendetta against St. John’s.

Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is this Tuesday, December 8th. Due to the low number of individuals attending weekend and weekday Masses we have adjusted the holy day Mass schedule to the Vigil Mass and four Masses on December 8th. The Mass schedule is as follows:

Monday, Dec. 7th (Vigil) – 5:15 pm

Tuesday, Dec. 8th – 7:45 am, 12:05, 1:05 and 5:15 pm

All Masses will be celebrated in the Upper Church.

Thank you for all you do for our parish and for your commitment to ensure that

St. John’s is “Good News in the Heart of Philadelphia.” Stay safe and healthy. Peace and God’s blessings for a spiritually renewing Advent Season.
